The third book of the series, The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner’s Dilemma is the work of Trenton Lee Stewart with illustrations done by Diana Sudyka. Their first novel got them critical acclaim throughout the world of childrens books, and when such high demand for quality protagonists and great escapes can’t be denied, they’ve been steady with the adventures of Reynie, Kate, Sticky, and Constance ever since.
These children are special, and have been chosen to join the society in order to help the world at large. With past exciting quests under their belts from the past, they’re ready to take on anything and anyone! This time, rolling blackouts keep happening in Stonetown, and it’s up to the kids to find out who’s behind them and why. But it isn’t that simple. Ledrotha Curtain is working to get back his evil Whisperer machine, and each of the protagonists will have to use their powers to stop him. However, what they face this time may drive them away from their town, their families, and even one another. This may be their biggest challenge yet, and if they can’t find a way out, the group might be finished. Can they save themselves—and each other—to come out and save the day once more?
The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner’s Dilemma has a good deal of character development so that readers will see their favorite characters grow and change, even as they tackle a difficult task. Trenton Lee Stewart makes sure to keep things interesting for his readers (best for ages 8-12), as well as offering up some truly hilarious bits, metaphors, quirky dialogue, and mind-boggling brain teasers. A good time with a little something for everyone in this book, it’s a read that will be gobbled up in mere days by excited kids.
The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner’s Dilemma will leave kids ready for more, but they will have to wait a little while before the next book appears on the shelves. Until then, kids will simply have to content themselves with rereading previous adventures with Reynie, Kate, Sticky, and Constance.
