Rotten Richie and the Ultimate Dare

Sibling rivalry was never so funny or so heartwarming. With plenty of crazy dares to go around, Patricia Polacco gives readers a few of their favorite characters once again in Rotten Richie and the Ultimate Dare. You simply never know what these two are going to do when faced with each other.

Trisha and Richie are back! They’ve graced the pages of Patricia Polacco’s childrens books before, and they’re here again, annoying each other and getting into all sorts of shenanigans. This time Trisha is in ballet class, and she loves every minute of it. She gets to wear the special ballet shoes and dance around in a beautiful pink tutu. It is a hard skill to learn, but that does not deter her. In fact, nothing much could deter her – except maybe the constant annoying teasing of Richie. Finally, Trisha has had enough and challenges Richie. If ballet is not such a big deal, then he can just perform in her recital! Richie actually agrees, but under condition.

If he performs in the recital, Trisha has to play hockey on his team for their big game! But a dare is a dare, and now isn’t the time to back down!

Fans of the first installment featuring these two characters will enjoy Rotten Richie and the Ultimate Dare. Kids will be nothing but giggles when Richie and Trisha actually swap out places and Richie dances around and Trisha handles a hockey stick. Readers get to see the annoyance on both their faces for one another and their surprise as they tackle each other’s beloved pastimes. Polacco’s rich illustrations and attention to detail give this story energy and pep.

Kids ages 5 and up will have a great time reading about the rivalry between Trisha and Richie, and many who have siblings will be able to relate to these two. In the end each character learns a little something about the other, ending happily for all. Rotten Richie and the Ultimate Dare means a good time for everyone involved; whether or not siblings learn from Trisha and Richie will depend, but parents can always hope for the best!
