If You Give a Moose a Muffin

How can you tell if a child likes a tale that you have read to them? If they ask to read it again, of course! In some cases you’ll even find young children taking the books that they truly enjoy and reading them to themselves, having memorized the words in the book. This is a great step towards reading, but is only something that can happen when a child truly loves a story. The “If You Give A…” series from author Laura Numeroff and illustrator Felicia Bond are just such tales that are so beloved that they are read over and over again by young children.

One of the more better known picture books in the series is the If You Give a Moose a Muffin story. This is a story all about a moose and what happens when you innocently bake some muffins and a moose happens by! Of course you’ll want to make certain you’re an excellent host (a little lesson the tale teaches children) and to give the title character what he wants, but things don’t turn out exactly as anyone expects. He makes a bit of chaos, but he does tidy up after himself, which is a great lesson for young children as well.

There are a number of wonderful things about these books. One is that it teaches children little life lessons in hilarious ways. Another is that it is absolute silliness that both parent and child can truly enjoy reading together. But best of all is the fact that Numeroff is able to start with one thing and then to cycle back to it at the end, showing children that everything connects with something else and helping them to not get sidetracked.

The tale of If You Give a Moose a Muffin is one that is a truly enjoyable read from the first page to the last, and is one tale that will be requested over and over again, particularly at bedtime. It is one of those books that will be remembered by

children fondly even as they grow much older.
