Children’s books do not always have to be one title. After all, why choose one when you can have five! Kevin Henkes has put together a cozy little combination of short stories that each have their own small book. All of these are put together in a quaint box so they stay together all the times on any child’s shelf. Together they make Kevin Henkes’s Box of Treats.
Each small book has a story about Kevin Henkes’s beloved mouse Lilly and several of her friends. Each one is special and with a title that will remind any youngster of delicious goodies. In this set, kids will find Lilly’s Chocolate Heart, Owen’s Marshmallow Chick, Wemberly’s Ice-Cream Star, Julius’s Candy Corn, and Sheila Rae’s Peppermint Stick. All of Lilly’s friends are finally together in one fun box set, and they all involve a particular treat as mentioned on their covers, many of which match up with holidays, such as Owen’s Marshmallow Chick for Easter and Wemberly’s Ice-Cream Star for Fourth of July. Kids will thoroughly enjoy all the stories Henkes has put together just for them. A Box of Treats surely lives up to its name.
Complete with Henkes’s famous illustrations, this group of books will be a welcome addition to any child’s bookshelf. Lilly and all of her friends have their own fun style, such as wearing a crown or being dressed in a clown’s outfit. They all match well with
their particular yummy item and the holidays generally associated with it. Though some holidays are not mentioned outright, it is not hard to figure out what time of year it is for some of these candies and sweets to appear. This makes A Box of Treats great for year-round reading, and the size of the books is perfect for little hands, such as ages 3 and up.
The bright colors and carefree designs allow for plenty of enjoyment, and kids who love Henkes’s other books will like these just as well. Likewise, don’t be surprised if after reading any of
these titles, kids start to get hungry for a few goodies of their own!
