The Going-To-Bed Book

Looking for children’s books that are perfect to use when trying to get a child to settle into sleep?  Look no further.  Renowned children’s author Sandra Boynton brings her trademark style to bedtime with The Going-To-Bed Book.  Published in 1982, it has become a staple of parents’ bedtime routines, complete with pajamas and nighttime stars.

Boynton’s easily recognizable style brings goofy animals of all sorts to a child’s bedtime, from little pigs to big elephants, hopping rabbits to bulky rhinoceroses.  Put together with simple text and rhyming words for kids, the group of silly animals go through a before bed prepping.  As the sun sets and night comes in, they go for a scrub in the tub (all the animals at once – and with plenty of bath bubbles), put on their jammies, brush their teeth, do a little bit of exercise on the deck of their boat, and, finally exhausted, they all crawl into bed and rock to sleep.

Kids will relish The Going-To-Bed Book as they make their own preparations to sink into dreamland.  Parents can have their child act out all the same actions in the book and kids can learn a little more about the progression of time as the sun sets and the sky grows slowly darker within the book until the moon finally rises.  The Going-To-Bed Book uses fun and soft coloring with cartoony animals kids will love.  Found in the board book section, it’s perfect for little hands to grasp as mom or dad reads and points out pictures.
